Tom's Tips - Putting - 6 Fun Drills to Make Practice Count

Practicing your putting can often feel repetitive or boring - but it doesn’t have to be. This month, we're sharing 6 simple drills that will instantly make your putting sessions more fun and effective. Even better? All you need is a putter, a ball with alignment lines, and two tee pegs.

These creative putting challenges will sharpen your precision, improve your focus, and help you build confidence on the green.

Drill 1: Right-Hand Side Aim

Set up to the left-hand side of the hole, and your mission is to sink the ball through the right-hand side of the cup. This challenges your accuracy and helps develop better control over your start line.

Drill 2: Left-Hand Side Aim

Flip it! Now set up to the right-hand side of the hole, and aim to sink the putt through the left-hand side. Practicing both sides improves your ability to read breaks and execute precise lines under pressure.

Drill 3: Through the Gate

Set your two tee pegs just wider than your ball, forming a mini gate a few feet in front of you. Try to roll your putt cleanly through the gate without touching the pegs. This helps refine your stroke path and ball alignment.

Drill 4: Hit the Tee Peg

Now place a single tee peg behind the hole. Your goal? Hit the tee peg with your putt—this encourages you to get the ball rolling with pace and control, great for training solid follow-throughs and reducing short putts.

Drill 5: Front-of-the-Hole Drop

This time, avoid the tee peg behind the hole. Instead, focus on dropping the ball right into the front of the cup. This drill teaches delicate speed control and helps prevent the ball from lipping out due to overhit putts.

Drill 6: Land Between the Pegs

For the final challenge, place your two tee pegs about a ball’s width apart. Try to land your ball so it comes to rest between them. This is a test of distance control and stopping power, especially fun to try from longer distances.

Pro Tip: Mix It Up

Practice each drill from different distances and angles to simulate real on-course situations. The more variety you add, the more resilient and confident your putting will become.
