Start with your swing speed, typical shot shape and what you want more of - distance, feel or control. Golf balls are designed with different compression levels and cover materials that affect launch, spin and responsiveness around the greens.

If you swing slower, a softer, lower compression ball will usually launch more easily and feel better off the face. Faster swings can benefit from firmer, higher performance balls that manage spin and maintain speed. If you’re unsure, choose based on your main priority - distance, soft feel or short-game control - and adjust from there.

Distance balls are built to reduce spin and maximise ball speed. They tend to fly straighter and longer for many players, with a firmer feel and durable cover.

Soft feel balls prioritise feel and easier launch. They’re popular with moderate swing speeds and players who want more feedback and comfort at impact.

Tour balls use multi-layer construction and premium covers to deliver higher spin and control into greens, while still maintaining strong distance off the tee. They’re typically aimed at more consistent ball strikers but can be used by any golfer who values short-game performance.

Premium golf balls usually offer more advanced construction, tighter consistency and better short-game control, especially on approach shots and around the greens. That added performance is real - but not every golfer will see the full benefit.

If your strike and launch conditions vary a lot, a mid-range or distance ball may give you similar real-world results at a lower cost. Higher priced balls tend to make the biggest difference for players who already have repeatable contact and want more spin and control where it matters most.

Replace a golf ball as soon as it shows visible damage such as cuts, cracks or heavy scuffing. Surface damage affects flight and spin, especially on iron and wedge shots.

Even without major marks, performance can drop after repeated impacts with trees, paths or cart tracks. If a ball has been in water for a long period, it’s also worth swapping out. For competitive or scoring rounds, using a clean, undamaged ball is the safest choice for consistent performance.
